Project Description :
Rio was commissioned by the University of Glamorgan in 2007 to design this BREEAM “excellent” rating a £3.9M state of the art centre for vocational education. The building houses specialist workshops such as plumbing, carpentry and brick–laying together with IT and administration suites.
The scheme uses a combination of timber, aluminium standing seam cladding, curtain walling and engineering brick. The positioning of the building successfully frames views of the historical Engine House and furnaces of the Ynys Fach Iron Works.
Carwyn Jones (Welsh Assembly Governments First Minister), who opened the facility in 2011 said: “The workshops are a real example of the first-class education and training facilities we will need to build the economy Wales needs for the 21st century. These state-of-the-art facilities will enable people in Merthyr to compete with the very best in their skills and training.”
