Shortlisted for the RIBA and RICS Wales Awards 2011, Carmarthen Provisions Market has overcome considerable site, local community and logistical challenges to deliver an outstanding contemporary landmark building for Carmarthenshire County Council.

Appointed by Simons Developments in 2005, Rio Architects developed a unique design that reinforces the importance of the historic clock tower whilst providing the focus for the St. Catherine’s Walk Development. The market is the pinnacle of this important regeneration scheme which has been received well by the local community.

The design, received favorably by the Design Commission for Wales, consists of a monolithic Welsh blue pennant sandstone base paying deference to the historic walled town (murage) of Carmarthen, locally sourced timber and a north glazed zinc clad roof.

Carmarthen Provisions Market was opened by HRH The Princess Royal in 2010.
