The Royal Mint
Project Description :

In June 2014, the Royal Mint commissioned Rio Architects as part of the team to design a “World Class" visitor’s attraction on a site within the boundaries of their existing facility at Llantrisant, South Wales.

The attraction will provide an opportunity to outline the history of the Royal Mint and feature exhibitions of Royal Mint artefacts using display, film and interactive exhibits, the building will also act as a conduit to a wider tour of the Royal Mint site to allow the public to experience the minting process.

A handful of coins provided the inspiration for the facade of tessellating hexagons. The colours within the oxidised stainless steel cladding subtly change with the movement of the sun.
