Client Cardiff University
From early concept sketches, it was agreed that the architecture should have a strong resonance with the activity of the Biosciences faculty. Consequently, the hexagonal motif has been employed to reinforce the connection between Bioscience and the architecture of the building. The resulting design is an honest embodiment of form following function; an endorsement of the fusion of art and architecture.
The use of hexagonal structures united to form typical molecular themes on the elevation subtly enhances the building function and expression, but also affords an artistic richness to the treatment of the façade. Therefore, public art is an integral part of the design as opposed to an applied afterthought.
“The Rio team are enthusiastic and dedicated, taking time to meet the client departments at all stages of the project to ensure that an informed and good working relationship is developed and maintained. This type of glazing facade is the first of its kind. The scheme is now complete and the glazing facade is stunning. This is testament of the architectural flare of Rio Architects.”
