A limited architectural competition by Wynndel Property Management resulted in Rio Architects successfully gaining the commission against five other practices. The mixed-use development includes private residential dwellings (47 houses and 88 flats), 34 affordable dwellings, 8 office units and a café.
The five-acre industrial site lies at the northern end of Chepstow town and fronts the River Wye. It is within the town’s historic conservation area and demands a design that addresses a responsible approach to a sustainable urban density while sensitively stitching this comprehensive redevelopment into the fabric of the existing historic town.
The site is at an extremely important gateway to Wales and we have undertaken a visual impact assessment to understand the effect of the development on the town and in particular identify that the vista to the existing castle is maintained.
Phase 1 delivered the street facing element of 5 townhouses with Phase 2, delivering 35 riverside apartments, currently on site.
