This development of a 70-bed care home facility is part of a wider residential masterplan by Rio of the former St Winefrides Hospital and Convent. This includes building new townhouses, the renovation of the existing Art Deco hospital and convent to create new apartments as well as the refurbishment and extension of Pembroke House to create the care home.
The development is within the heart of the Conway Road Conservation Area and immediately adjacent to the Grade II listed Conway Road Methodist Church. The layout of the new care home reflects an urban pattern informed by the Methodist Church as the focus. The three-storey building forms a crescent around a communal garden area which separates the care home and the church.
The design has been conceived from the viewpoint of creating a light, open and flexible environment, avoiding dark circulation spaces and rooms, thus dispelling common notions of a typical care home. It will produce a unique product that distinguishes itself from market trends and provides a wonderful place to live.
